This handbook has been designed to give you all of the information you will need when thinking about an extension to your child/children’s standard school day. We provide a popular, well-established breakfast club provision.
Staff have experience of working with children and have the appropriate skills and qualifications such as safeguarding and food hygiene. Alongside this, at least one member of staff holds a first aid qualification to ensure that your child/ren will be both well looked after and have an enjoyable time at the club.
We provide a childcare service and work hard to promote the following principles:
Breakfast Club is open during term time only. The club opening times are as follows:
Monday to Friday:
8.00am – start of the school day. Cost £3 per child per day.
If your child is entitled to pupil premium, entry is funded by the school.
Please note breakfast will stop being served and entry will close to the club at 8.30am. We are only able to provide breakfast care for children on roll at Wicklea Academy, subject to appropriate staffing ratios and space.
To book please follow the instructions below:
If a session is already full you will be unable to select it. Once your booking is confirmed it cannot be changed or amended and you will be charged.
Breakfast club must be paid for in advance; this will secure your child’s space. Fees are not refundable unless agreed with the school in advance. Bookings must be made by 3pm the day before your child is attending a session. You can book sessions up to a term at a time.
If your child is off sick or does not turn up, food, administration costs and supervision will have already been considered in the costings, so you will not be refunded. If parents take children on holiday during term time, fees will not be refunded.
It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure their child arrives at breakfast club and is handed over to a breakfast club adult. If parents choose to drop children off and not bring their child to the hall, it is at their own risk. Please do not drop children at the school prior to 8am.
The fees are set by the school and Directors and are reviewed on an annual basis.
Wicklea Academy aims to keep fees to a minimum, whilst still raising enough income to manage our running costs with no impact on the school budget.
Wicklea Academy Breakfast Club is a child-led facility with a focus on play and social interaction. We ask the children at regular intervals for ideas on how to improve the club and the different activities that we could implement.
In order to accommodate the age ranges and interests of the children attending the club, we offer a wide variety of activities including:
As well as taking part in structured activities, the children also have the opportunity to just relax, chat with their
friends and generally ‘chill’ ready for a busy day at school.
Each day, a selection of cereals and toast with spread will be available to eat and squash or milk will be available to drink. Fresh water and pieces of fruit will also be available daily.
We recognise the importance of providing healthy nutrition for children, delivered in a calm, friendly setting. We promote independence by encouraging the children to clear away after themselves. Alongside this, we will encourage correct etiquette in the dinner hall. We use fresh ingredients and follow guidelines for healthy eating.
We follow all Health and Safety Regulations in line with our kitchen at lunchtimes.
Procedures and systems are as per the school policy. A Designated Safeguarding Lead is always on call for advice during the hours of breakfast club. The named DSL for Breakfast Club is Matthew Morgan.
We will make every effort to accommodate and welcome any child with special educational needs or a disability. We liaise with parents/carers and relevant professionals to meet the child’s specific needs. We will endeavour to accommodate children of all abilities, whilst working within the club’s limitations. Each case will be assessed individually and risk assessed to ensure everyone’s safety. If your child receives 1-1 support in school, we will not be able to provide this for breakfast club.
Children are expected to respect each other, staff and visitors. Staff will encourage an atmosphere of care and consideration between all members of the club including children, staff and visitors. Breakfast Club aims to encourage appropriate behaviour through praise for good behaviour; emphasis on co-operative play and sharing; talking to children with the courtesy that we expect from them and engaging children in activities. Wicklea Academy does not tolerate bullying of any kind. If we discover that an act of ‘bullying or intimidation’ has taken place, we act immediately to stop any further occurrences of such behaviour in line with school procedures.
The club procedures for dealing with unacceptable behaviour are as follows:
There will always be a staff member present, who has undertaken appropriate first aid training.
If your child has an accident whilst attending Breakfast Club, this will be recorded in line with whole school procedures.
In the case of your child requiring medication during the breakfast club times, this will need to be discussed with the school in advance.
The premises meet accepted standards and conform to Health and Safety Requirements, as well as Fire Regulations.
We have an agreed standard of cleanliness and all members of staff take care to ensure that the premises remain clean and safe for all. All floors will be kept clean, non-slippery and free from any obstruction. All spillages will be cleaned up immediately – wet floor signs will be used as required. Children are never allowed in the kitchen area. All cleaning materials are kept out of children’s reach, with the exception of cloths and warm soapy water.
The school holds regular, unannounced fire drills to ensure that all children are aware of fire exits and assembly points. There is an escape plan on the wall for children, parents/carers and visitors to see and all fire drills are logged.
